Hockey from the Blind Side, More Observations from the West Coast, What about the defense?

Well, here I am out in California for another few weeks for work. With the season coming coder to starting the regular season, I will, unfortunately, miss the first games. At least, I’ll try to catch them via NHL GameCenter, but I would have liked to have tried to get to the home opener, the last one for the Isles at the “old barn”. In any event, at least, the…

Isles Fall in Pre-Season Home Clash

September 25, 2014

The Islanders had some bright spots last night, but unfortunately for them, they were not that bright, as they fell to the Hurricanes 4-2 last night at the NVMC. Three power play goals were scored against the home team, mostly due to some inefficiencies on the back line.  Jaro Halak played the entire game and made some strong saves, but as you would expect from a pre-season venture, there were…

Isles “Mindset” Entering Training Camp

As the Islanders officially embark on there final season at Nassau Coliseum, there has not been a more important training camp in recent memory this one. Rebuilding the organization via the draft was completed this past summer with the selection of Josh Ho-Sang.  This summer saw the goaltending and team depth completed through free agency. There are still some questions, but the answers will be coming in a short few weeks with the completion…

Mid Summer Thoughts: Development

This is usually the time of year when I not only look at this Islanders team as a whole, I look and try to figure out what direction or philosophy the Islanders will be taking this upcoming year. I begin to just look at the overall roster and possibly look for any moves that still need to be made before training camp, but to my delight, there really isn’t a move for Islanders General…

Donovan & Gallant Remain Islanders

The New York Islanders have announced that defenseman Matt Donovan and forward Brett Gallant have accepted their qualifying offers. According to Cap Geek, Donovan’s one-year, two-way deal is worth $826,875, NHL level. If he is demoted, he will receive the same $65,000 in the AHL as he did in his previous contract. Gallant will make $75,000 in the AHL and $605,000 if he returns to the NHL.     My Take:…

Hockey from the Blind Side, Evaluating After the Smoke Has Cleared

Are the Isles done with off season moves yet? I guess that is now the question that still is being bandied about in parts of Islander Country. Paul addressed this topic in a recent post, and I fall into his camp as far as believing that the Islanders could be very well set for what they have for next season, yet, at the same time, there are assets that can…

Should The Islanders Trade For A Defenceman?

July 6, 2014

Before the free agency season began, many fans already had a shopping list of positions the Islanders needed to target. A top line left winger for John Tavares a, top 4 defenceman and a starting goalie. The starting goalie was a given, but with the rest of the team, I wrote and responded on twitter by asking this question: Where are you putting them? There clearly wasn’t enough room unless the Islanders were going to…

The Morning After The Frenzy

July 2, 2014

It’s been said that when you want to improve your organization, you build through the draft. When you want to improve from last season, you turn to Free Agency. Last year the Islanders ended up having to use three goalies because of injuries or just mediocre play. The Islanders were out of the hunt by Christmas because of the injuries to Evgeny Nabokov, Lubomir Visnovsky, Brian Strait, some shoddy offense and…

Isles Get TJ BRennan

The Isles have signed Toronto Marlies defenseman TJ Brennan to a deal. The AHL All Star scored 25 goals and 47 assists for the Marlies last season.  The Moorestown NJ native is 25 years old, and will be the offensive defenseman that the Islanders will need. Matt Donovan – you better work your butt off – you have competition.
