Kabanov Bought Out

July 15, 2014

From Art Staple: Islanders have placed F Kirill Kabanov on unconditional waivers. My Take: He’ll be bought out of his final year of his entry-level contract. I did not put Kabanov on my Bridgeport “roster” as I wasn’t sure if he’d be back. Behavior issues plagued him, but when reading and talking to a few people, his dad (believed to be his agent) was an issue as well as he…

Donovan & Gallant Remain Islanders

The New York Islanders have announced that defenseman Matt Donovan and forward Brett Gallant have accepted their qualifying offers. According to Cap Geek, Donovan’s one-year, two-way deal is worth $826,875, NHL level. If he is demoted, he will receive the same $65,000 in the AHL as he did in his previous contract. Gallant will make $75,000 in the AHL and $605,000 if he returns to the NHL.     My Take:…

Grabovski and Kulemin are now ISLES

July 2, 2014

Well – day two was a bigger splash than expected. In a two player swoop, Garth Snow signed Mikhail Grabovski and Nikolai Kulemin to four year deals.  Grabovski (20M) and Kulemin (16M), were teammates in Toronto, and according to the report on SportsNet.ca, wanted to sign together. UNIONDALE, N.Y. — The New York Islanders made a big splash on the second day of free agency, signing centre Mikhail Grabovski and…

The Morning After The Frenzy

July 2, 2014

It’s been said that when you want to improve your organization, you build through the draft. When you want to improve from last season, you turn to Free Agency. Last year the Islanders ended up having to use three goalies because of injuries or just mediocre play. The Islanders were out of the hunt by Christmas because of the injuries to Evgeny Nabokov, Lubomir Visnovsky, Brian Strait, some shoddy offense and…

Isles Get TJ BRennan

The Isles have signed Toronto Marlies defenseman TJ Brennan to a deal. The AHL All Star scored 25 goals and 47 assists for the Marlies last season.  The Moorestown NJ native is 25 years old, and will be the offensive defenseman that the Islanders will need. Matt Donovan – you better work your butt off – you have competition.

Chad Johnson – Isles new goaltender

July 1, 2014

As per SportsNet.ca, the Islanders have signed Chad Johnson, the former Boston goaltender for the upcoming season. Johnson was 17-4-3 for the Bruins last season with a GAG of 2.10.  The following information is from Wikipedia: Johnson played college ice hockey for the University of Alaska Nanooks. Johnson was drafted by the Pittsburgh Penguins 125th overall in the 2006 NHL Entry Draft. During his senior year, he was the Central Collegiate Hockey Association Player of the Year,…

How Today’s “Free Agency” Affects The Draft

Today is something new that it was mentioned but that most fans may not have remembered. Due to a new rule in the CBA, GM’s are allowed to talk to RFA’s and UFA’s starting now. This has never happened before and this is why the Islanders were so quick to try to move Dan Boyle for anything the last week or so.     From Michael Russo: “Please be advised…

Still No Decision From Boyle

June 13, 2014

From Art Staple of Newsday via Twitter: G. Bazos, Dan Boyle’s agent, said that Boyle still hasn’t made a decision on whether to negotiate with #Isles. “We have no real timetable.” The #Isles, however, may have a timetable to get Boyle signed. Could look to move his rights if there’s no decision in next 7-10 days. My Take: Most fans (the same ones expecting the announcement of Charles Wang selling…

Boyle To Give Isles Answer

June 10, 2014

From Art Staple of Newsday via Twitter George Bazos, Dan Boyle’s agent, says Boyle will let #Isles know by end of this week whether he’s interested in starting contract talks. My take: That would give Islanders General Manager Garth Snow 2 weeks to either get a contract done or trade his rights, say to Detroit or Tampa Bay (hint, hint) who are looking for the same kind of qualities from…

Is Dan Boyle A Good Idea?

June 7, 2014

As I’ve had to step away for a few days, media outlets released that The New York Islanders acquired former San Jose Sharks defenseman Dan Boyle for a conditional pick in 2015. After trading for and eventually signing goalie Jaroslav Halak, the Islanders are rolling the dice once again, trying to get players under contract before they enter unrestricted free agency. My first reaction was not of over joyed enthusiasm. I had made…
