Notes from Ice Works

With the two pre-season games completed, the Bridgeport Sound Tigers ended up at 1-1-0-0.  They defeated the Providence Bruins 3-1 in Marlborough, Mass, and were defeated last night by the Manchester Monarchs 2-0 at St. Anselm, NH. I went to practice, which was open to Islanders season ticket holders at IceWorks today.  The practice, as usual, was spirited, and much more intricate than any practice that I have seen of…

Tavares Swiss Debut and Sound Tigers Miscellany

October 6, 2012

John Tavares got his Swiss career going yesterday for SC Bern.  Long story short, he was held off the scoresheet.  Game recap here.  Not sure if the translate feature works with the link that I included, but I’m sure your browser can handle it.  Those Bern uni’s are somethin’ huh?  Advertise much?  Sweet logo though with the bear and all. Anyone else getting ‘scatter brain’ trying to track all the…

Developing Prospects Key For Isles Future

With the NHL now cancelling games up until October 24th, I think now is a good time to write why I believe a short lockout is beneficial, if not crucial to the Islanders as an organization. Don’t get me wrong, I want the NHL back in the worst way.  I’m just not in any hurry to see prospects like Nino Niederreiter and yes Travis Hamonic back in the NHL just…

Seven with Staley (segment 1: Dee Karl)

October 1, 2012

New site means new opportunities. I’ve been trying to think of something new and fresh that I can add to our already stellar stream of posts’ and information we here at islestalk.com share. What I came up with is Seven with Staley. I’ll be doing very simple and very quick interview type sessions with many different people all geared exclusively towards Islander hockey. I’ll be speaking with other bloggers, up…

Could The Prodigal Son Come Home?

An interesting question, to say the least. According to an article in the New York Post, former Islander great Pat LaFontaine has been contacted by some European investors about purchasing the Islanders from Charles Wang. Wang has said that he would not allow his team to play at the Nassau Coliseum after the 2014-2015 season, has said that he could sell this team, if the price is right. According to…

JT – Going on a Swiss Holiday

Well – at least he knows someone there. John Tavares, according to reports from AP, has signed with the same Swiss club in Bern, that Islanders Captain Mark Streit plays for. The number one draft pick in 2009, and first time All-Star last season, is now among almost 100 players that are now in action in leagues all over the European continent. Tavares is now the fourth Islander to be…

Are You Missing Hockey Yet

In 2004, this lockout was with a lot of fan fare.  It was one of a lot of talk, a great deal of rhetoric from both the players side, as well as the NHL.  It was outrage and extreme anger from the fans, as the number 4 sport in the US was closing its doors.  There were many that thought that the unhappiness from all sides, would make the two…

On this day….

As we all remember, it was a beautifull sunny day like this one.  A day that started out being an average Tuesday in my office.  Just something you characterize as a typical day. Then a phone call. A little after 9, the phone rang in my office.  When I looked at the screen to see the number, I noticed the international code 01144.  Great Britain.  I realized it was my…
