Welcome Back Raddy! Eight extras to Camp

Welcome back # 24

It is not the prodigal son coming home, but a return nevertheless.

Radek Martinek, who spent nine years in Islander blues, has returned to the Island and signed a one year contract for an undisclosed amount.  The 36 year old defenseman has provided the Islanders with some sound defensive play, but unfortunately, a great deal of injuries.

The 228th pick in the 1999 NHL entry draft, Martinek has played in more than 70 games in only one of his nine years.  Last season, he played only seven games for the Columbus Blue Jackets, scoring one goal, before a concussion knocked him out.

What will his role be?  Obviously, they are not looking for Bobby Orr statistics from him.  He will be a fill role as a 7th defenseman for the team.  He can still provide a consistent game, when healthy, and can still be a mentor for the young guys from Bridgeport, who probably still know him from previous camp.

There’s just not enough padding to protect him. In a limited ice time role he could be a good deal.
