Wow, I can now add radio host to my resume.
Another dream that I had for a long time, that has come true. I really always wanted to do something sports related. That is what got me to start blogging all of those years ago.
Now – I get to talk about it.
Last night, John and I hosted our show on WGBB 1240AM. Sports Talk 1240 is one of the shows that are done every Sunday night from 8 – 10 PM. When Rob Kowal, the Sports Director of the station put a note on Facebook stating that he was looking for hosts, I got the courage to ask about it. I had been on his NY Hockey Talk show some years ago, and I thought it was cool that he gets to talk about sports on a radio station. As I said, it was always a dream of mine to do, but unfortuately, not as a career path. I was a Computer Science Major, and broadcast journalism was not in the cards for me.
Well – Rob asked me to join up, and last night, with my buddy John at my side, we ventured on our new project. I really was nervous, but thank God, it did not show. I have a tendency to say a great deal of ‘like’ and ‘um’ when I am trying to conjure up a thought or two, but I did some reading beforehand, on how to negate those. I think I did a good job of squelching that.
Having Jiggs come on, really put me at ease. I can truly call Jiggs a “FRIEND” and when I knew I was going to get this show off the ground, he was the FIRST person that came to mind. Of course, he gladly accepted, and it really made me feel go good, that he felt honored that we asked him to be on the maiden voyage for us. For John, Jiggs was one person that helped get his ‘eyes’ on hockey, so I think it was a mutual admiration society. I was glad that I got that for John too.
Then Brad Kurtzberg came on. If you have never read his articles on the Inside Hockey website, then start doing it. He is a great read, and has a very strong insight to the game. Plus, he has a funny side, that can make you laugh out loud. We have had a great deal of banter in the press box over the last few years, and it was great for him to come on our first show as well.
Well – it was such a good time, and an hour FLEW by. We get to do this again on September 8th. I am working real hard to secure an interview with Garth Snow before the start of camp. I really would like to get his feel before his boys step onto training camp ice for the first time. I am sure he will be excited in his calm and cool manner.
To check out the podcast (which should be out on the site sometime on Monday), check out www.sportsradiony.com. Look for it on the front page this week. It should also be on the podcast list under past shows.
Well – it is back to work for me, and back to writing for a few weeks. But camp is coming soon. Time to get our hockey hats on, and start bleeding BLUE and ORANGE…
