Islander Comparison: A left wing Ziggy Palffy
It’s because of this draft that I believe it’s possible that even though the talent is there, Kaliyev is one of those players who could slip through the cracks and, like Oliver Wahlstrom last year, fall right into the Islander’s lap at number 23. However, he’s my only left winger in my wish list and I’m not expecting him to be there which is why he’s number 4. Simply put, he scores goals and can fly up the ice with ease, but his defensive game, while improving, still needs work. He won the OHL Championship last year with Hamilton and made it to the Memorial Cup, so the playoff experience also appeals to me. Simply put: If the Rangers draft Kakko and the Islanders somehow land Kaliyev, it could be a wash in about 2-3 years. If Kaliyev can continue to work on his defensive game while the offensive numbers can remain close to the same, the Islanders may have drafted a true gem.
Number 3 on my wish list continues tomorrow so stay tuned.
