Isles Talk 2019 NHL Draft Top 31 Prospects

For those who are new and for the ones who continue to come back every year after the Stanley Cup playoffs are over, this has turned out to be one of my favorite topics to write about and I’ve been doing it for about ten years now (maybe more…Yikes!!). This year is going to be different because the Islanders are drafting at number 23 this year and I must say I’m really throwing a dart at the board and hoping it hits. Some years I get the right choice and others I got blind-sided. I usually do about 15 in-depth player reviews, but this year is going to be different. I’m going to rank my top 31 prospects in terms of consistency spread across 4 months of research and then over the next five days, I’ll publish one player per day as to who I think the Isles will draft leading up to Friday. I’m also giving everyone 31 prospects just in case the Isles decide to move up in the draft. So let’s get started.

1. Jack Hughes LC, USA, NTDP U18

2. Kaapo Kakko RW/LC, Finland, TPS Liiga

3. Bowen Byram LD, Canada, Vancouver WHL

4. Dylan Cozens RC/RW, Canada, Lethbridge WHL

5. Vasili Podkolzin RW, Russia, SKA St. Petersburg MHL

6. Kirby Dach RC/RW, Canada, Saskatoon WHL

7. Alex Turcotte LC, USA, NTDP U18

8. Philip Broberg LD, Sweden, AIK Allsvenskan

9. Trevor Zegras LC, USA, NTDP U18

10. Matthew Boldy LW, USA, NTDP U18

11. Cole Caufield RW, USA, NTDP U18

12. Peyton Krebs LC/LW, Canada, Kootenay WHL

13. Arthur Kaliyev LW, USA, Hamilton OHL

14. Alex Newhook LC/LW, Canada, Victoria BCHL

15. Cam York LD, USA, NTDP U18

16. Raphaël Lavoie RW/RC, Canada, Halifax QMJHL

17. Ryan Suzuki LC, Canada, Barrie OHL

18. Victor Söderström RD, Sweden, Brynäs SHL

19. Thomas Harley LD, Canada/USA, Mississauga OHL

20. Spencer Knight G, USA, NTDP U18

21. Jakob Pelletier LW/RW, Canada, Moncton QMJHL

22. Moritz Seider RD, Germany, Adler Mannheim DEL

23. Bobby Brink RW, USA, Sioux City USHL

24. Samuel Poulin LW, Canada, Sherbrooke QMJHL

25. Matthew Robertson LD, Canada, Edmonton WHL

26. Ville Heinola LD, Finland, Lukko Liiga

27. Brett Leason RW/RC, Canada, Prince Albert WHL

28. Tobias Björnfot LD, Sweden, Djurgardens J20

29. Phillip Tomasino RW/RC, Canada, Niagara OHL

30. Egor Afanasyev LC, Russia, Muskegon USHL

31. Connor McMichael LC, Canada, London OHL

Now I’d like to make this clear: this is not a mock draft. If you’re an Islanders fan looking at this and you see Bobby Brink at number 23 and think “oh he’s the one” that’s not what I was going for. There is still a possibility that the Isles could trade up in this draft(or not have a pick at all) or Brink is longer available or they may have a prospect higher on their list. So over the next five days, I will be picking out players and calling it my “whish list” in an attempt to see who the Isles might draft with the number 23 pick. Be sure to come check out Isles Talk for the first prospect on my “wish list.”
