Isles Talk 2015 Draft Preview: Stephen Desrocher

Okay folks, it’s a new scenario: Garth Snow cannot make a trade to move up in the draft and he has to pick at number 72. For me, this is like trying to hit my target riding a horse backwards and blindfolded. No clue. But since I’ve been covering the draft since 2008, I’m usually pretty good at picking the right player in the correct round. For example, some players I had slated at number 70 and they went at 73 or I had them pegged for 59 and they were 56. Close but no cigar, especially Glen Sather’s. Remember, I’m swinging for the fences here, meaning the risk/reward meter is high. So here now is another player who the Islanders may see in either the 72nd or 82nd pick in the third round.

Name: Stephen Desrocher

Position: Defense

Height/Weight: 6’4″ 198lbs

Central Scouting: 145 (North America)

TSN Bob McKenzie: N/A

TSN Craig Button: 82

Now you know the difference between a second rounder and a third. There’s not much info on third rounders’ which is why I appreciate Button’s out-of-the-box approach. He’s a teammate and roommate of Islanders first round pick Michael Dal Colle who play for the Memorial Cup Champions Oshawa Generals. He came alive in the playoffs racking up 7 points in 16 games and looked to improve as the competition got better. He needs to shoot the puck more, which has been reiterated by Dal Colle many times and when Desrocher does, everything gets better. So for him if he is drafted by the Islanders, he’ll play another year along side his roommate, gain the confidence he needs, mature physically and become a possible gem in the future.
