The NHL came out with it’s 30 teams in 30 days segment for the month of August and the New York Islanders were first on their list. First, let me start off my saying I thoroughly enjoyed this piece and everyone should go read it and then come back here. I thought the top prospects page was pretty much spot on as well. Basically from what I got from the rest it were some of the usual questions entering the season:
Who will be the linemate to John Tavares and Kyle Okposo?
My answer: To be truthful, it’s Brock Nelson. I think during the locker clean out, Nelson got nothing but praise from Tavares and while it’s not a guarantee, it is a huge endorsement.
Will Griffin Reinhart make the team out of camp?
My answer: I wrote a back in April that Griffin would probably make it out of camp.
Is this defense good enough?
My answer: Many believe the Isles should go after another defenseman, but I wrote here why things should stand pat for now.
With the additions of Grabovski, Kulemin and Conacher what kind of lineup will Islanders fans see to start the season?
My answer: This one’s a touchy question because Islanders fans want certain players like Strome and Lee to make the team but I wrote why both, at least in the beginning may get sent down.
Will the Isles make the playoffs?
My answer: Fantasy Preview writer Corey Masisak seems to think so. While Ej Hradek and Dan Rosen said the team improved, but they are not playoff bound. But to be truthful, these two are on social media all the time and if they get this one wrong, they’ll be ok with it. Better to be wrong and have the Islanders make the playoffs than to say the Isles do make it and they’re wrong. Islanders social media will never forgive them, especially when it’s the last year at the Coliseum.
What really interested me was the fan poll NHL.com had and they asked where the Isles would finish in the Metro Division. As of this writing almost 31% said between 5th and 6th. That just goes to prove my point that if (more like when) the Isles do make the playoffs, they will be the “Cinderella” team, that no one expected them to win, except of course for Isles fans, who will see their team in the playoffs for the second time in three years. Get used to hearing that.
