*** Just finished session one of the day – White Team practice. ***
Thoughts from camp
Got to talk to Scott Mayfield after practice. He, being the ‘old guy’ here (his fourth), feels very comfortable in the setting. He feels that his goal is to get some weight and speed. He weighed in at 218, about 10 pounds more than he was during the season in Bridgeport. He feels that there is a good program here to stress on the things he needs to work on before camp.
Mayfield, the 34th pick in the 2011 draft will have some serious competition for playing time whether it would be on Long Island, or in Bridgeport with the likes of Griffin Reinhart, Ryan Pulock, Ville Pokka among others and the current NHL’ers in Matt Donovan, Aaron Ness and Kevin Czuczman for positions on the squad.
Mayfield feels that with some more work in Denver with his former college team colleagues, he will be ready for a tough camp in the next few weeks.
Listening to Michael Dal Colle speak to the media after practice, you can see why the Isles selected him with the number 5 pick in this years draft. He told the media that he understands that the players at the NHL level are much bigger, faster and stronger, and he realizes that he will have work extremely hard to get to that level. However, he has a strong confidence in his beliefs, and it is refreshing to see, because despite being a high draft pick, he has a great down-to-earth attitude; something that you would expect to see in a player of his caliber.
Although the odds may not be there for him this season, do not, by any means, count out the possibilities of him making a serious splash for time at camp, and perhaps a spot come October.
For the next article, later this afternoon, I will be speaking with Stephon Williams, our goaltender picked in last year’s draft from Minnesota State, to see how his development has gone so far.
