Donovan & Gallant Remain Islanders

Donovan must be ready.
Donovan must be ready.

The New York Islanders have announced that defenseman Matt Donovan and forward Brett Gallant have accepted their qualifying offers.

According to Cap Geek, Donovan’s one-year, two-way deal is worth $826,875, NHL level. If he is demoted, he will receive the same $65,000 in the AHL as he did in his previous contract. Gallant will make $75,000 in the AHL and $605,000 if he returns to the NHL.

My Take: Like Anders Lee & Ryan Strome, Donovan is going to have to battle during training camp if he wants to make a significant contribution this year.  I believe he’ll be going up against newly-signed AHL defenseman of the year TJ Brennan for playing minutes. For the sake of depth, if Donovan doesn’t disappoint but can’t beat out Brennan, Donovan could switch 7th defenseman time with Matt Carkner during the season. Of course this being the middle of July, this is purely speculation, but one thing is clear: If Donovan must be ready this year.

As for Gallant, don’t be surprised if he’s named Captain of next years Bridgeport Sound Tigers. I originally believed Aaron Ness would get it, but some fans who know the organization better than I do believe Gallant would make a better fit as he is a great presence in the locker room as well as off the ice. Would not mind to see him up to Long Island for a few games just to see him scrap with someone as well.
