Isles Talk Draft Preview: Jake Virtanen

Could he be the next Kyle Okposo?
Could he be the next Kyle Okposo?

If the Islanders were to trade down, there are a few future gems that, if given the time to mature, would pay huge dividends down the road. One such person is right winger Jake Virtanen. A complete power forward, Virtanen can shoot the puck extremely hard, & is strong along the boards. He has great acceleration and speed for a power forward and can play the physical game. The question is: Can he be a top 6? Some have said that he’s got the potential, but some as of late believe that he may be better suited for the third line, two-way type.

Name: Jake Virtanen

Virtanen is a true power forward. If the Isles were to draft him, he has the potential of either a top 6 like Kyle Okposo, or that of a third line Anders Lee. When Lee was originally drafted, he was slated for the third line potential, but has found his scoring touch. Look for Virtanen to be a mix of both, can score a bunch of goals, is a fast skater but can dish out some pounding. On the international stage, Virtanen won a gold medal playing for team Canada’s under 18 team at the 2013 Ivan Hlinka Memorial Tournament in August. He is slated to be chosen for the World Junior Championships this coming year.  He needs some time, but he’ll get with the Islanders.
