Isles Talk Draft Preview: William Nylander

Could William be as good as his dad?
Could William be as good as his dad?

Add another son to this draft preview. Michael Nylander, former NHL player, most notably on the Washington Capitals now has his son, William entering the NHL draft. If you take a look at William’s numbers, don’t be deceived because he was a 17 year old playing against men. Like his father, he has the potential to play for a long time in the NHL, but like some of the others past Dal Colle in the number 5 slot, Nylander has some work to do.

Name: William Nylander

Position: Center/Right Wing/Left Wing

Height: 5’11”

Weight: 174lbs.

League: SHL

DOB:5.1.1996

ISS: 5 CSS (Europe): 2

Style Comparisons: Jeff Skinner

Season Totals: GP: 22 Goals: 1 Assists: 6 Points 7 +/- -3

Again, don’t be too down on those numbers. He’ll be playing for Modo next season playing amongst men. He should be in all the major international tournaments, so there should be moments where he will just take over. He is a project despite my praises. If there’s one word to describe him it’s this: Finesse. He needs to integrate a power forward style to his game. Needs to bulk up, learn to crash the boards along with going hard to the front of the net. His hockey sense has not fully matured so he really needs to keep his game simple and not go fancy against men who already know what he’s about to do. His defensive game, or lack there of, also needs some education. Not going to lie folks, but what he really needs is to be drafted by the Detroit Red Wings. They’ll give him time, teach him correctly and he’ll pay off handsomely.

Draft Rankings: It was mentioned by a few people that Snow has a tendency to trade two second rounder for a late first (See Brock Nelson). Could that happen this year? You bet. Need to take that into consideration as well. With the Isles picking 5th in the 3rd round as well, going for a late first helps, especially with no first rounder next year, so far.
