Isles Talk Draft Preview: Sam Reinhart

The Brothers Reinhart?You never know.
The Brothers Reinhart? You never know.

He’s arguably the best player available in the draft. He’s also Islanders future top defenseman Griffin’s little brother. He’s Sam Reinhart. Sam captained Team Canada to the under-18 IIHF World Championships Gold Medal and racked up 105 points in 60 games in Juniors this year. If the Florida Panthers wanted a forward with the first overall pick, Reinhart is that player. He and defenseman Aaron Ekblad are the top 2 players in this draft and are in a League of their own.

Name: Sam Reinhart

Position: Center

Height: 6’1″

Weight: 183lbs.

League: WHL

DOB: 11.06.1995

ISS: 1 CSS: 3

Style Comparison: Jonathan Toews

He has the skills to not only to make himself better, but his line mates as well. He’s got great skating, acceleration and he’s good defensively. Reinhart has all the tools: passing, acceleration, faceoffs, penalty killing, shooting accuracy, you name it, he’s there. He’s had his dad and two older brothers to learn from which is why, to many, Sam may be the best out of all three of the Reinhart brothers. All he has to do is mature, so he’ll either be in the WHL for one more season (his fourth) or he may impress a team like Buffalo and he starts his NHL career next season.  Obviously gaining some muscle will come along in time, but it’s not to bold of a statement to label him a franchise player. He doesn’t do one thing right, he just does a little bit everything right, which makes him the most complete forward in this draft.

Draft Rankings: Again, Dal Colle is most likely at this point to be drafted in the number 5 position. We all know by now Garth is actively shopping the pick, so is everyone else with their respective picks. The trade talk won’t intensify until teams meet in Philadelphia. If the Isles intent is to trade down, then Draisaitl and Dal Colle won’t be there, so moving players like Vertanen and Ritchie up in the rankings makes sense. From what I’ve been reading/hearing, Nylander isn’t much of a team player so that may be a reason for his decline.
