As we get down to the final two prospect this week, You’ll be hearing a lot of rumors between now and draft day. Take them all with a grain of salt. One person who is making rumors fly as far as moving up in the draft is Nikolaj Ehlers. He has gone from a top 15 pick to a possible top 7 pick in a very short time. Lot’s of talk that the Winnipeg Jets & Vancouver Canucks really want this prospect. Why is that? Glad you asked.

Name: Nikolaj Ehlers

Position: Right Wing

Height: 5’11”

Weight: 162lbs

League: QMJHL

DOB: 2.13.1995

ISS: 11 CSS 13

Style Comparisons: Patrick Kane; Future Michael Grabner who finishes!

Season Totals: Games: 63 Goals: 49 Assists: 55 Points: 104

I know the Jets are high on Ehlers, but it may be possible that Vancouver may want to get him first. As one of the best skaters in this draft class, Ehlers speed and acceleration is off the learning curve amongst the rest of his peers while his great agility makes other defenders look silly. If you’re a defender, my suggestion to you is skate hard to you defensive zone and try not to take him one-on-one as you’ll be made an example of on NHL’s top 10 plays. The draw back to Ehlers is his size. He needs to gain a lot of muscle  without sacrificing his speed which will then improve his defensive game. He just needs some physical maturing more than anything else. Once that happens, then a proper critique of his defensive game will warrant merit.

Draft Rankings: Already heard the Anaheim rumor if swapping the 5th and Josh Bailey, for the 10th and Jakob Silfverberg, a player who already been traded twice in his short career. Not enough in my opinion as the Isles would certainly lose Dal Colle,  Ehlers, Ritchie and Vertanen before picking. Top 5 pick is more valuable than that.
