Isles Talk Draft Preview: Nick Ritchie

Isles fans would love to have a Gillies style player once again.
Isles fans would love to have a Gillies style player once again.

If there was a big power forward who uses his size well, finishes his checks and probably get the crowd on their feet a few times, it’s Nick Ritchie. To add to that, some have said that his wrist shot is the best in this years draft. But like most power forwards, he’ll need some time before he’s fully to be unleashed in the NHL.

Name: Nick Ritchie

Position: Left Wing

Height: 6’2″

Weight: 218lbs

League: OHL

Style Comparison: Milan Lucic

Ritchie is a big power forward who has outstanding size and decent hands. He loves going into traffic, protects and drives to the puck to the net. He does play the physical game, drops his gloves with the intent of really hurting you and can easily separate an opponent from the puck. Acceleration is an issues due to his size, however, his skating and acceleration are improving. Consistency needs to be worked on, but with enough time, that won’t be a problem. He has some good international experience winning gold with Team Canada at the 2013 IIHF Under 18 tournament, and again at this summer’s Ivan Hlinka tournament. To my knowledge, and I could be wrong, there’s only one Islander that I can think of who played that style: Gillies.

Draft Rankings: Okay, things got interesting as I got to talk to a few people who love the draft as I do and their are some changes. They were telling me that even though I have Dal Colle, which would be correct, they will be shocked if the Isles stay at 5. Every team save for Buffalo have said that they’d be willing to move the their pick. They are also intrigued about Ehlers, who in their mind if he had more weight to him, would be going higher than a top 7 overall. Second, thanks to Aaron Lerner (@alerner31) we found out that the Isles brass were at a town meeting and mentioned three players: Dal Colle, Ehlers, and (Here you go Paige!) Draisaitl if the Isles were to stay at 5. I could say this now, If the Islanders have the option of either drafting Dal Colle or Draisaitl, there could be a really nice deal for Garth. For now, I’m sticking with Dal Colle, but watch for Ehlers.
