Isles Talk Draft Preview: Michael Dal Colle

Could he be the next Islander?
Could he be the next Islander?

So we’ve come to the final Isles Talk Draft Preview and I’ve saved the best for last. As I stated on WGBB last Sunday night, he’s the best left winger in this years draft. Craig Button went a step further and considers Dal Colle to be the best goal scorer out of everyone. If the Isles keep this pick, it’ll be tough not to choose Dal Colle. If the Islanders do draft him, it’s my opinion that the Islanders will have completed their rebuilding through the draft as he should be NHL ready in 2 years. When he does arrive on the Island, many are going to be thrilled the Islanders drafted him.

Name: Michael Dal Colle

Position: Left Wing

Height: 6’2″

Weight: 183lbs

League: OHL

DOB: 6.20.1996

ISS: 3 CSS: 5

Style Comparisons: A motivated Alexie Kovalev, Eric Staal

Season Stats: Games: 67 Goals: 39 Assists: 56 Points: 95

He’s a very good skater. His overall defense does need some work, but as he physically matures, that should improve. He does not get knocked off the puck as he has good balance and he’ll just beat you one-on-one with his agility and soft hands, and is postionally sound defensively. He does play well along the boards, has great vision, passing is good. He does have some international experience playing in the Under 17 World Hockey Championships and Under 18 Hlinka Memorial Tournament in which  he scored 10 points in 10 games. He also won a gold medal at the Ivan Hlinka tournament.

Quite frankly, this is probably the best hope the Isles have of getting a potential top 6 left winger. Even if the Isles can’t sign a top tier winger, Dal Colle is projected to be NHL ready in 2 years. This is the last piece of any kind of drafting the Isles need to do, if they decide to draft him.

Coming up on Friday morning, I’ll be predicting who the Isles will select with the 5th overall pick, but I’ll go one step further as I will give my scenarios for the other draft picks going as far down as the first pick in the third round. For now enjoy the rumors and possible trades that could be made by the Islanders either today and Friday before the draft.
