Isles Talk Draft Preview: Kasperi Kapanen

Will he be as good as his dad?
Will he be as good as his dad?

If there’s one thing that fans will notice, it’s that there are certain last names are coming back to the NHL. Many former NHL players’ sons are now trying to make their own names for themselves. One of them in my top 10 draft preview this year is Kasperi Kapanen, son of Sami. The one thing Kapanen has over the other draft hopefuls is that he’s playing amongst men over in Europe.

Name: Kasperi Kapanen

Position: Right Wing

Height: 6′ 0″

Weight: 181lbs

League: Finland

DOB: 7.23.1996

ISS: 13 CSS: 1 (Europe)

Style Comparison: Phil Kessel

He does have some good defensive instincts and plays a North American game when it comes to his back checking. Kapanen has all the tools to be a scorer and a playmaker. What he needs is time and with the Canes being front-loaded on offense, this might be a perfect fit for both.

Draft Rankings: Some movement occurred as I’ll move Kapanen down and move Ekblad and Reinhart up. Dal Colle is still the favorite so far, but so was Bo Horvat at this time last year and looked what happened. Sam Bennet takes a few steps up. Reinhart and Ekblad move up because the Isles to have enough players in the organization that they could move up in this years draft and I must take that into consideration.
