Ekblad is the top defenseman.
Ekblad is the top defenseman.

When you have to build a team from scratch, you have to have a solid foundation. Ekblad is a franchise defenceman who can log 25 minutes or more and play in all game situations.  The maturity at his age is way above most of the others.

Name: Aaron Ekblad

Position: Defense

Height: 6’4″

Weight: 216

League: OHL

DOB: 2.7.1996 (18)

ISS: 2 CSS: 2

Style Comparisons: Shea Weber

Season Totals: GP: 58 Goals: 23 Assists: 30 Points: 53

Put simply, he’s the best defenseman in this draft and could be ready for NHL action next year. Already I’m reading that Toronto, Calgary and Edmonton, especially Edmonton would love to trade up for Ekblad.  He received the exceptional player status in the OHL, the second player to do so in League history. The first player was someone named Tavares. I’m going to have Ekblad ranked lower only because I don’t think he’ll go no further than number 3 in this years draft. Anything is possible, but an Ekblad/Reinhart combination is not likely for the Islanders.
