Huge Statement Win

KPMidway through the first period, Rick Nash scored two goals, and one via a breakaway, and it began to look like the Rangers would be waltzing through this contest tonight at MSG.

Think Again.

The Comeback kids, starting with Matt Martin, got the Isles on the board late in the first period.  John Tavares would get his first of three assists on the night, and Kyle Okposo got his 50th point on the play.

The second period saw the Rangers Chris Kreider tip in a puck past Kevin Poulin to give the home team a two goal advantage.  But once again, the hottest team in the NHL would come back once again from a two goal deficit.  Thomas Hickey would pinch in, and drive to the net, and gets a puck in front of him to push past Cam Talbot to push the deficit to 1.

Matty Marts gets the first goal tonight

A few minutes later, Colin McDonald would get the game even, as the fourth line would provide the team with a spark.  Martin, Casey Cizikas and McDonald were providing lots of life and energy to the Isles.

The third period would be a series of chances back and fourth (27 shots combined).  But a critical penalty taken by the Ranger bench for too many men on the ice would prove to be costly for the Blueshirts.  The Isles would take advantage, as Thomas Vanek pushes the puck past Talbot to give the Isles the lead 4-3.

With the Rangers removing the goaltender, the Isles won two big faceoffs, and Frans Nielsen would put the puck into an empty net to seal the deal.

The victory pushes the Isles to only three games under NHL 500 (21-24-7), and are looking to climb out of the basement of the Metro Division, and are five points from a wild card position.

A huge statement win for the Isles, as they come home and take on the Penguins on Thursday night.  With all of these games through the end of the month – each one is bigger than the other.  The Islanders capitalized on their breaks, and came from behind once again.  If they can keep this passion up, teams like the Blues, Penguins and Rangers can be beaten.  Almost ‘never say die’ moments from this team.  You have to like them a lot now!
