Home games aplenty over the next six days for the boys from Uniondale.
The first is against the boys from the ‘Peg. The ‘no longer in the East’ Jets come to the Island after defeating the Devils 2-1 on Monday night at the Rock. They are hovering at the .500 mark right now – a number that would give them a playoff spot.
Oh – I forgot – they moved to the West. Well – never mind.
Bryan Little is the top scorer on this team – with 12 goals and 24 points in 26 games. Dustin Byfuglien is next with 21 and the Captain Andrew Ladd has 19. Evander Kane, normally an Islander killer, has struggled a little with only 14 points in 24 contests.
Ondrej Pavelec has played most of the games this season for Winnipeg, and former Islander Al Montoya is his backup. Montoya has played well in his starts this season, and I am going to take a guess that he may start tonight against his former club.
As for the home squad, will we see Andrew MacDonald in the lineup tonight? He got hurt in the last game on Saturday, and got hurt on Monday at practice. He played with a different helmet yesterday, so let’s see if he is in. Thomas Hickey, to the delight of a lot of fans, is day-to-day. Will we see Calvin deHaan make his Islander debut this season?
This Winnipeg team is not going to be an offensive juggernaut, so it beehoves them to get on the board right away on the Jets, and establish themselves early. With all of the struggles on the road this season, they Isles HAVE to make home ice difficult. They are in the top 10 in scoring, but need to have that all around game.
We can all talk until we are blue in the face about a sixty minute game, so it is time to just zip it and do it. Bottom line, is we know that these guys are professionals; I am not going to doubt their passion and want to perform at their utmost. However, I am just so tired of hearing about BATTLE LEVEL! What this team needs is a RESULTS LEVEL!
I have written about this time and time again over the years; the Islanders should have the ghost of former Long Islander Al Davis talk to these guys. He had a very simple expression, and for his Oakland Raider teams, it worked to a T.
JUST WIN BABY!
Forget about the cliche’s. Forget about the talk about outworking. You can outwork someone all day, but they will take advantage of their moments, you don’t and you end on the short side of the stick.
JUST WIN BABY!
Time to change the culture here. Time to get the confidence back. Time to stop gripping the sticks so much, and just do it.
It all starts tonight, as we get to be at the barn four times in seven days.
Well at least I will be getting better gas mileage this week…
