Islanders News Before Camp

It appears from most of the media that Lubomir Visnovski will in fact be a New York Islander for the shortened 2013 season.  Radek Martinek was also spotted working out with current Islanders and will probably get invited to camp. Griffin Reinhart, the Islanders 2012 top draft pick is also invited to camp along with fellow 2011 draft pick Ryan Strome.

With Visnovski now coming, to be honest, I have not seen this much potential offense from this defense in a long time. I don’t believe Reinhart will make this team as he has top 4 potential as of now and those spots are filled. I am leery about Martinek coming back due to his injury history. If healthy, he could be a benefit to a thin defense. Strome will make the team. His buddy Dougie Hamilton will make the Bruins squad which will not make their junior team that competitive come playoff time. With the World Junior Championships over, a 48 game NHL season for Strome is probably not considered a “rush” in his development.

  1. Agreed. The Islanders must, more so than any other season, stay out of the penalty box. They must arrange themselves as a scrappy team willing to play offense at any given time: dump and chase, hack alongside the boards, and feed the points. Not saying this will happen, but it should happen if they hope to ever make any type of run to for the (dare I say it) playoffs. They certainly cannot skate with most teams, and as you mentioned, some of their ‘better’ defensemen have a tenuous health record. Here’s to dreaming!
